Connecting South Africans with employment opportunities

Project overview

With one of the highest unemployment rates in the world, South Africans need access to job opportunities and support to inspire future employment.

Through partnerships with organizations like SweepSouth — which provides opportunities for those seeking out and interested in taking on work — the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation aims to create family economic stability in South Africa.

I am not stressed about finding work, I am earning enough money to pay for my studies, and I am able to work around my studies — so I can achieve my dreams.

How it helps

SweepSouth is an online service that connects vetted domestic cleaners, called SweepStars, to homeowners. Founded to spur job creation while respecting the dignity of their workers, SweepSouth allows SweepStars to dictate their own schedules.

“Working through the SweepSouth platform, I’ve got more access to work as they can connect me to jobs every day of the week,” shares SweepStar Sihle.

SweepSouth removes friction in two ways — connecting those who want to work with immediate jobs and wages, and creating a credible cleaning service for those interested in hiring domestic workers.

SweepSouth has demonstrated impact on job creation through the more than 4,000 domestic workers active on their platform — 97% of the women have children, and over 80% were previously unemployed. SweepSouth has created jobs that are within reach and provide a sense of empowerment that allows for continued growth.
