KIPP Austin Public Schools offers a Social-Emotional Learning and Restorative Practices Program in all its elementary schools to support children in their academic and emotional development. This builds upon the public charter school network’s efforts to provide students from low-income backgrounds with access to high-quality education and health services to improve their outcomes in academics and life. Our grant helped KIPP Austin Public Schools launch this program to care for children in our own backyard.
How it helps
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is based on five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Building these in children creates a sense of belonging and supports their well-being. They lead to the development of empathy, self-advocacy, persistence, and self-discipline, all reliable predictors of college success.
KIPP Austin educators support students through teaching social-emotional skills, developing clearly defined consequences for misbehavior, implementing behavior intervention plans, and creating a joyful school culture. The program targets barriers to learning like significant school absences and disruptive conduct, which are academically and socially harmful to students’ development.
All of this serves to improve academic outcomes, prepare students for college, and help them thrive every day in the classroom.
Meet the KIPP Austin students
KIPP Austin consists of 10 tuition-free schools educating more than 5,300 students from educationally underserved communities. The majority of KIPP Austin’s elementary school students are first-generation, collegebound students who live in low-income neighborhoods in East and South Austin. Eighty-three percent are eligible for the federal free and reduced-price meals program, and more than 50% are English language learners.
KIPP network’s main goal is to help more kids from low-income communities persist through college. Empowering students early in life through key leadership and SEL programs sets them on the path to success.
