Sub-K: Providing Access to Affordable Banking Solutions Across India

Project overview

In India, families with low incomes face many barriers in accessing formal banking services. Many find it challenging to open and manage a traditional bank account, making it very difficult to save for their futures.

Sub-K, a technology company based on financial inclusion, enables affordable banking services, making it easier for more people to access personal and business loans, savings, and payments.

With Sub-K, we can do all the transactions with a single fingerprint. This is a huge advantage for us. Now we plan everything financially and save money on a regular basis helping us to provide for our children.

How it helps

In India, 53 percent of individuals living on low incomes do not use formal banking services and are unable to save money.

Sub-K focuses on reaching India’s unbanked consumers with the right kind of financial tools. Their model empowers local entrepreneurs to become community banks by arming them with mobile technology that they can use anytime, anywhere, to conduct transactions with customers. Once a customer has a bank account, they can use fingerprint authentication on the Sub-K agent’s device to deposit or withdraw money in seconds. No long forms, no long lines — just a newfound experience of financial independence.

With the ease of these frequent, small transactions, customers can build savings and create a larger buffer against economic shocks. Sub-K offers access to loans and other financial services that can help more people grow their businesses or better manage their families’ finances.

Since its incorporation, the Dell Foundation has invested in — and worked alongside — Sub-K to provide opportunities to the underserved in India. In 2018, we reinvested in the company. During this period, Sub-K leveraged its over 15 bank partnerships to further extend its product portfolio to include microfinance and MSME loans. Through its in-house mobile technology, Sub-K now enables partner banks to originate, disburse, and recover loans to and from new and existing customers, extending beyond their existing network of banks.

Today, Sub-K continues their efforts to expand bank services to families with easy, affordable financial tools that improve lives.
